Hello and welcome, I'm Steven Turner and I am the person behind Coachment. I am a life and business coach who holds a Master's degree in coaching and mentoring from Oxford Brookes University and an Honour's degree in business studies from the Open University.
Degrees can indicate a certain standard of competency with respect to the technical aspects of coaching but they can't indicate if someone is a good coach because good coaching centers around lived and shared experiences.
On the business side, I can offer many years of work experience that has included entry level positions, senior positions, marketing, operations and starting-up a successful telecommunications business that I directed for more than 15 years.
On the personal side, I have experienced a journey that has included some very difficult and emotionally trying times but which has also provided many rewarding and joyful times. Becoming a single parent to my 6 year old son; after my wife passed away from cancer, taught me that I was more capable than I imagined and that asking for help is a strength and not a weakness. This together with other experiences allows me to genuinely empathize with peoples circumstances not only on an emotional level but also on a pragmatic level.
Through research that I undertook at Oxford Brookes University, I developed a unique approach to coaching that is based on three core philosophical principles:
Humanism acknowledges and respects that individuals have value, potential and are unique autonomous agents. A non-directive coaching approach that encourages clients to self-realize their own abilities, opportunities and possibilities. The client is accorded unconditional positive regard and acceptance within a client-centered, non-judgmental coaching relationship.
Pragmatism points out that our thoughts and language are driven by our need to take some type of action in the real world in the pursuit of some type of desired result. A coaching approach that focuses on outcomes and encourages clients to take-action. Allows for the pragmatic and flexible use of a variety of methods and tools in the coaching process such as open-ended and powerful questions, metaphors, SWOT analysis, etc.
Systems Philosophy recognizes that the world is made up of interconnected systems/parts that share certain patterns of behavior. A persons life is not solitary by nature but consists of parts, connections between the parts and the whole system of parts. Work, health, relationships, mental well-being are but just a few of the parts that make up a persons life and so within the coaching relationship, the client and/or business is viewed-holistically.

"On life's journey of discovery, we sometimes encounter an uncertain and challenging path ahead that may include, having to choose which path to take, finding the courage to cross a difficult bridge or simply learning how to take the first step.
I am honest and so will tell you upfront that coaching cannot navigate these difficult parts of the path for you. However, coaching can help you to unlock your inner self, purpose and capabilities that will in turn inform your clarity of thought.
In this way you will discover your own way forward by applying the compass that you already have inside"

What is Life Coaching and how does it work?
Life coaching helps clients to realize and change certain aspects of their lives for the purpose of successfully attaining desired future goals. Professional life coaches do not tell clients what to do or give advice but use active listening, probing questions and evidence based techniques to empower clients to discover themselves, the questions they need to ask themselves and to uncover the answers they require in order to take action and make their desired future self a reality.
What is Business Coaching and how does it work?
Business coaching focuses on enhancing the clients performance by revealing their true potential with relation to their business. Coaching may start with goal-setting and then with the help of the coach, an assessment of strengths and the areas that may require improvement is introspectively undertaken by the client in order to ascertain how their goals can be achieved or even if the goals are truly desirable.
What is Mentoring and how does it work?
Mentoring is a more directive approach that can include the transfer of knowledge, experience and insight from one person to another. It can involve a long-term relationship that encourages both personal and professional growth. Training frequently plays a part in mentoring to enhance the business and/or personal skills of a client. Showing a client how to develop their own business plan would be one example of this type of one-on-one skills transfer within a mentoring relationship.
Can a blend of these approaches be tailored for my specific needs?
Yes, any of these approaches can be offered as a stand alone offering or as a bespoked blend. A blended approach can be especially relevant to small business owners who often find their personal well-being intimately entwined with their professional success. Provided that the boundary between coaching and mentoring is clearly stated within the process, a blended approach can offer many benefits such as the alignment of business and personal goals, faster and more in-depth results from a one-stop facilitator, and increased awareness of any possible motivational issues that may be affecting both personal and professional development.
